In Italy there's no such thing as 'half-term'... but a lot of people take time off school to go skiing anyway... (the teachers are ok with it... they take their revenge by lumbering children with lots of homework which they're forced to do when dead tired after a full day skiing... at least that's my memory of it all...)
It's called 'white week', which I think it's a lovely expression.
Well, we've just got back from our 'settimana bianca' and it was fantastic! We stayed just outside San Cassiano, a small village in Alta Val Badia. North-east corner of Italy, near the Austrian border. I highly recommend this region. Huge amount of skiing, always snow, fantastic food. And if skiing is not your 'thang', the area is brilliant is summer too, for walking, cycling etc.
Now of course now I'm going to bore you to death with lots of self-indulgent pictures because I'm in total denial of the mountain of washing and ironing that's ahead of me today.
(Plus a husband with a terrible cold, No 1 with one just as bad, No 2 with tonsillites and No 3 already grumpy for the incoming return to school on Monday... yay... wanna swap with me?)
In no particular order:
This was the view from our bedroom window. Mountains don't come much better looking than the Dolomites folks. Gotta check them out.
Sunset on our first day... we skiied as much as we could.
We also ate a lot. Of course. This is my lunch of polenta with cheese. A lot of cheese. A lot of polenta. I skiied a little slower that afternoon.
Snow and clouds didn't stop us.
And the sun when it shone... oh my... breath-taking.
No I didn't crash into the barrier.
The church in San Cassiano.
Ok... I could go on an on... just two more and then I have a date with the ironing board...
... sigh... I love this little log cabin... in any weather.
What a gorgeous place! I must live in a gorgeous country after all :)
