I have another question for you...
Close your eyes and think of a Christmas stocking... does the foot point to the left or to the right?
Does it matter?
I'm sewing for my stall and I've made two patchwork stockings 'toe one way' and the next one came pointing the other way and now I don't know what to do, is there a right or wrong way?
You know, like when you repeat a word lots and lots of times and it starts losing it's meaning...
(photo taken on an exceedingly grey afternoon, depressing)
Help.
I had no idea I even had an opinion on this- but turns out I do! The foot should point right. But if it already points left so be it!

I'd say toe right too, but it depends what end of the mantlepiece you plan to hang it, I suppose. I don't really feel there is a correct orientation. Perhaps facing towards the north pole, like some kind of prayer mat is the correct answer.

Mmm it's funny, I was going to say to the left! Guess that's your answer then, it doesn't really matter!
In the afternoon? That looks like the middle of the night. Boo to early dark evenings

I thought pointing to the left, for whatever reason.

The one I had as a child (which is hanging just alongside me) points to the right as I look at it, but I'm sure the ones you see in glossy magazines hanging on traditional fireplaces seem to point to the left ... so who knows! I'm sure Santa doesn't discriminate! :)

I say left too, it was my first mental image, is that about 50:50?

Haha -- I've read through your comments -- the problem with asking these things is that you always get different opinions LOL. Ours have always been to the left. I was shocked when I went to google images and typed in "christmas stocking" and saw so many pointed to the right. That must mean it doesn't matter!!!

Funny, I never thought of that before. I instinctively made all mine with toes to the left...

I was thinking left. However if you like symmetry you might put one to the left and one to the right at each end of the mantlepiece!

Some of ours point left, some right, depending on which end of the mantelpiece they're on. Sorry, that's no help at all!

Either way is OK. I prefer left but I have done custom orders in the past and they wanted them to the right.

My stockings have always been identical on both sides so you could hang them either way....I f I imagine a stocking hanging up though the toe is pointing to the left!

I'd never given this any thought, but my immediate response was 'left'. I'm sure though that I'd want right and left if I was hanging one on each bedpost.

Either way is fine. When sewing them, I tend to make them so they go either way (which is tricky if you want to embroider names on them). I've bought stockings, too, and some are left, some are right. I try to have balance. Half and half with the toes all pointing to the fire place.

I use to sew for craft stores and I made them to turn both ways,so either way is fine.

I'd say toe left, but that's probably because of the ones my mum made for my kids have the cross stitch pattern that way. I'd never really thought about it before.

Yes, I'd say left, but either way would be absolutely fine. If someone has 2 kids in the same room, or, as already pointed out, either side of a fireplace, you'd want them both ways.

I'm not sure which way the toe should point. In fact, I'm having trouble remembering which way the toes on ours point! I would have to get them out and look.
Love seeing your craft space!

I see the majority of commenters have said 'left'. I don't think it matters. Perhaps it's something do do with whether you are left or right handed as to which way you prefer. I am left handed but I'm darned if I can remember which way the stockings I made face (they are in the loft and are not coming out for a few weeks yet).
