A few years ago my cousin, who used to work in the fashion industry, would occasionally score some sample fabrics and pass them on to me. I never complained. It would have been rude to do so.
The best of the lot by far was an excellent pile of shirting material; the moment it arrived I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it... of course it took me a couple of years to actually do it, but that's a story for another day. Perhaps I need therapy. Who knows.
The quilt is made of simple 6" squares with flashes of solids here and there. (48" by 48', enough for a little almost 6yrs old).
And a bright red binding.
The very thin wadding combined with the smoothness of the fabric makes this quilt so light and soft that it's a real pleasure to use.
I'd like to take full credit for this design but I must own up to the fact that I remember seeing a similar number a few years back and haven't been able to forget it. I can't say who/where/why/how, and if anybody knows I'd like to give credit where credit it's due... It was so long ago I can't even say how similar or how different this is.
In the meantime, No 3 is very happy with it and that, after all, is what counts.
i love this - so simple - the pops of color!

That is gorgeous! And I love the way the flashes of colour add movement to an otherwise static design. I like working with shirting fabric too. I scavenge the good bits from hubby's old cotton shirts and have quite a hoard ... [wanders away thinking about quilt top possibilities ...]

Sometimes the simplest things are the most effective! Good job.

The teacher/artist recycling store near me (buy by the bagfull) often has fabric sample squares and I've often been tempted. Now more than ever.

oh gorgeous, it is the red binding I'm in love with, I might just have to borrow that idea if you don't mind, I have a blue shirt quilt in need of a pop of colour x

I recognised it the moment I saw it! Your inspiration came from 'Baby's Corrugated Quilt' designed by Kaffe Fassett. It's in the book 'Passionate Patchwork' by Kaffe Fassett and Liza Prior Lucy.
I really like your version too! Your son is very lucky.

Okay, I thought you might think I was being anal; but I knew I had run across an inspiration quilt similar but I see someone beat me to it. I was thumbing the Kaffe book tonight and saw the Baby's Corrugated Quilt. Then I had to reverse track to find your blog. Love your take on it and hope your young son is enjoying every minute wrapped in it.
