Of all the bizarre reasons for having a flight cancelled a volcanic eruption takes the biscuit.
Seriously, you couldn't make it up if you'd try. "Excuse Mr Headmaster but we can't start school on time as there's ash in the atmosphere...", now there's a good story for the grandchildren.
Anyway, we don't know yet if our flight will be cancelled or not, but we're kind of exploring all options, the boys think it's great and are keeping the fingers crossed for another 'maffis' eruption in the next few days.
Watch this space.
In the meantime my sister and I have 'cruised' the shops for some retail therapy... one of the best thing I saw?
This:
unfortunately they didn't have my size...
That is the best t-shirt. My daughter-in-law chronicles the lives of our two grandchildren on her blog and I got Charlotte a t-shirt that said something about her life being a blog post. I can't remember the exact wording but it was pretty funny.

Classic! Love it. I imagine the airport schedule is going to be iffy for days. Pour another glass of wine and go with the flow...

I suspect there may be worse places to be stuck - imagine if you were caught here at this end wanting to go?!
Hope everyone stays happy ...

I would rather be stuck in Italy that the other way round!

Ha ha, great t-shirt. Isn't the volcano thing quite strange. I had a strange feeling today when I realised no-one could leave the country and no-one could get in. Most odd. A x

Yay for an extended vacation!
We had volcano issues last spring here and I remember being so worried about flights being cancelled since my husband I both had really fun trips planned, plus people coming up for our wedding. I hope if you get stuck that you can enjoy yourselves a bit more!

Love that T shirt. It's very strange to think that the skies are empty of planes. Not sure whether to wish you can get home soon or not (I'll wish whatever you wish yourself)- at least you're not stuck in some anymous hotel somewhere.

The tee is too funny!
And sounds like you're all having a lovely time despite the delay (I just read your subsequent post, too). Sure the boys won't mind being a bit late back to school!

Ha, that shirt is the best. I hope you all can get home, though -- I know a family who's afraid they'll miss their daughter's Confirmation if they can't get home in time.
Fingers crossed.
